Target shooting is a sport for all ages and capabilities, the club caters for a variety of disciplines, small-bore rifle and pistol, air weapons and archery. We generally shoot outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter, although if you feel hardy enough you can take part in long range leagues and competitions through the Winter months also!
HRC is a Home Office approved club and is affiliated to the NSRA (National Smallbore Rifle Association) and the MSBRA (Middlesex Smallbore Rifle Association). Regular inspections are carried out by the HO approval licensing authority, the Clubs FAC issuing Police Force and the NSRA. HRC hosts county competitions in the late Summer run by the MSBRA.
In 1904 Hampton Court Rifle was formed and officially opened 3 years later with a grand parade in Hampton High Street with amongst many military organisations, the then Metropolitan Water Board Fire Brigade with its engine helping to escort Field-Marshall Lord Roberts of Kandahar, a Boer War hero who was educated in Hampton, to officially open the ranges built in a former paddock of Bushy Park that had been given to us by King Edward VII.
The club was extremely successful, winning many competitions but closed in 1924.
It was reformed during World War 2, in 1942, shooting then in the car park of the new Hampton Swimming Pool, where our ranges had been originally located.
In 1955, with the great kindness of Thames Water, we moved to our present ranges at Hyde's Field where we now have a Clubroom, 4 firing point 20/25yd indoor range and 10 firing point 100yd and 10 firing point 50m outdoor ranges. Next tothe clubhouse is a 2 lane 10m Target Air Rifle (sub 6ft.lb) range with electronic target changers, and we have just completed a refurbishment programme to rebuild a derelict range to bring it in to use as a multi-discipline Prone, Standing, Bench Rest, Pistol, Rifle and Air Rifle range.
